The Responsibility of Remembrance Day

BY PETER ORMOND

November 11th means much more than sporting a poppy and attending a ceremony that honours our past war veterans. Back then, many of our ancestors gave the ultimate sacrifice for the betterment of humankind. My uncle Charlie Adams was one of them. Thanks to him and many others, today we have democratic freedom.

Have we forgotten this responsibility to participate as active citizens?

Less than 40 percent of Hamiltonians voted in the recent municipal election, despite a laundry list of issues that threaten to extinguish the poetic torch "In Flanders Fields" celebrates.
Perhaps the addictive techno-shock-and-awe of unlimited information has rendered us paralyzed, caught in the buffer zone of virtual reality.

Naomi Klein's book Shock Doctrine describes the political, military, and corporate agenda that cripples the world, and continues unchallenged. Essentially, entire nations are destabilized, collapsed, resistors rounded up, assets privatized as a new "successful" corporate model re-emerges. The "controlled" media celebrates the new "modern" system though it destines the average citizen to poverty, and skyrockets a select few to immeasurable wealth.

In Hamilton, the equivalent agenda concerns the 2,500 acre aerotropolis expansion.
Once the urban boundary is extended to include this land, the city plans to fund a large-scale project to service the area with roads and sewers in order to market it to developers. According to www.aerotropoliscosts.ca the initial cost estimates are over $350 million.

To date commercial developers have shown no interest in the proposed area, which is mostly farmland, while nearby an industrial park has been sitting 85 percent vacant for over ten years.

The project recently slipped forward under the radar as many of us were debating stadium plans. All on the backs of the average citizen, and only to benefit a few, already wealthy.

This Remembrance Day, remember your responsibility in every act, including profession, relationships, active citizenship and even stock picks.
Bravely learn about Hamilton's aerotropolis, and stand courageously for today. Lest we forget.
