FreeSkool Seeks New Organizers

05 April 2011 Written by  Hamilton Freeskool

Hamilton FreeSkool is a community education project dedicated to collaborative, egalitarian ways of learning. FreeSkool has been running in this city for over two years now, and has offered dozens of fun and exciting classes for anyone to join.

This Spring, we’re looking for two new faces to join the FreeSkool organizing committee.

We rotate organizers every two semesters of Freeskool, in order to increase diversity, help folks build new skills, and to encourage Freeskool to grow in new ways.

If selected, you would be joining two organizers from last semester to take on some of the tasks of organizing FreeSkool.

These are:

  • respond to the needs (space, promotion, financial, etc…) of freeskool class facilitators
  • maintain communication between organizers and facilitators
  • create/maintain main FreeSkool email list, check FreeSkool email
  • liason between OPIRG and facilitators/freeskool
  • update events listings, calendars, website and posters
  • organize the more random FreeSkool events – potlucks, one-off classes and lectures, field trips…
  • use various means to promote FreeSkool – media, website, flyers, posters, announcements, etc…
  • help coordinate new classes and prepare new facilitators
  • fundraise, secure funding/maintain freeskool finances
  • anything else you can imagine to ensure the continued awesomeness of FreeSkool

If you want a larger role in the FreeSkool family; if you want to build your activist, organizing, and facilitation skills; and if you agree with, or can work with, the manifesto and values of FreeSkool , then maybe being an organizer is for you!

We will be collecting applications until the middle of April, and will meet with prospective organizers throughout the month.

There will be a facilitated transition process, so that by the beginning of the summer FreeSkool term, you’ll be ready to rock it out and keep FreeSkool super and special.
