ABOUT MAYDAY

Mayday is a movement to create and strengthen local, alternative news media in Canada.
Funded entirely by Mayday Magazine Sustainers, Mayday has the freedom to express its views and the views of its members through the Mayday Presents series and to give Mayday Magazine a true mandate of progressive, investigative journalism and commentary.

Mayday Magazine aims to empower community-based publications across Canada to establish local, democratic media.  In turn, these grassroots media will transform the way Canadians access and share information.

Volunteer!

Written by Rob Porter

Mayday Magazine is always seeking enthusiastic volunteers for distribution, advertising sales, web site assistance, social networking help, and general promotions.

Distribution

Mayday Magazine's print edition is available at numerous locations across the greater Hamilton area. We'd love to be in even more places, and could use extra volunteers each month to spread Mayday far and wide.

Web Assistance

Got experience helping managing web sites, or want to gain experience? Our website is powered using the open-source content management system Joomla!, extended with the content construction kit K2. This allows the site to both be powerful in its extendibility and easy to learn how to manage. Contact us if you have some spare time each month to help out!

Photographers and Photo Editors

Whether you're aspiring to become a pro, or comfortable as an amateur photographer -- either way if you're looking for a project to regularly contribute to, you may have noticed we don't have a lot of photos online yet. Contact us if you'd like to become a regular contributor or editor of photos.

Ad Sales

Advertising sales helps fund Mayday Magazine and keep it alive and growing. If you have some sales skills and would like to help us out, we would be glad to have the assistance.

Bloggers

Now that we're online, we're seeking to expand to ongoing content throughout the month via blogs. Please contact us with any pitches for a blog, along with a couple sample entries so we can get a good idea of your writing style, and understand what you'd like to cover.

Social Networking

Do you enjoy tweeting a little too much? Do you live on Facebook? Mayday's seeking to expand its reach to new readers through new social media networks, and could use a few hands to make the work that much easier.

Contact Us!

If you are interested in helping us out in any of these capacities, please contact us.

About Mayday Magazine

Written by Seth Veenstra

We're sorry to announce that Mayday has ceased publishing with its June 2011 issue.

Mayday Magazine is a publication of the Sky Dragon Community Development Cooperative. The opinions expressed in Mayday Magazine do not necessarily reflect those of the advertisers, sustainers, Sky Dragon staff, or Sky Dragon members.

SUBMISSIONS

Mayday thrives on your submissions. If you have an idea for an article you’d like to write for Mayday, please send us a pitch explaining your idea. Our goal is to have consistent, high quality content that fills gaps in the local media landscape. To that end, we seek content that is:

Critical: Analyze, explore, challenge. No simple cheer-leading of party lines or positions.
Current: Is it happening right now? Or could it run any time? We will also prioritize local or regional stories.
Visionary: New possibilities and viewpoints, presenting solutions and vivid writing.
Progressive: Content from a social justice, anti-oppressive, ecologically-minded, and anti-colonial perspective.

For an article to appear in the next issue, get it to us by the 15th of the month before. Expect some back and forth in the week following your submission as we work to edit and refine your piece. For more details about submissions, please see our style guide on maydaymagazine.ca

We are also always looking for cover artists, photographers, website help, distributors, and ad-sales people.
Mayday needs input from readers. All feedback is taken into consideration. If there’s anything you’d like to see, just speak up and let us know!
